PUTRAJAYA has no immediate plans to develop a social media application specifically for Malaysians as the cost of building a platform is very high, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said.

He said it is not a top priority for Putrajaya at the moment as the government has many issues to solve like dilapidated schools and clinics.

“However, if there are private companies in Malaysia that wish to develop (such platforms), it is up to them. We do not prohibit (them from doing so).

“They can contact Mosti or MDEC for assistance,” Fahmi told reporters after attending the ministry’s monthly assembly in Putrajaya today.

During the government’s pro-Palestine rally held at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Sunday night, Fahmi had said Putrajaya was considering a proposal to develop a social media application specifically for Malaysians.

He pointed out that last year, Facebook alone earned an estimated US$600 million (RM2.7 billion) in Malaysia but did not ensure that the conditions and use of their platform in Malaysia were safe. – August 6, 2024.
